Unlike a lot of my friends who are regulars at a funky and informal, Yum Yum Cha in Select Citywalk Mall in Saket and Cyber Hub, Gurgaon, distance has been a huge deterrent in my case. Needless to say, the newly opened Yum Yum Cha in Khan Market brings me much happiness.
My early sushi memories take me to Yum Yum Tree, the Japanese kitsch style restaurant in New Friends Colony that had people thronging the space for Pan-Asian fare, till it shut shop early last year. I also recall several other dishes from their menu, especially the Peking Duck and, given the sweet tooth that I have, fried cream cheese wontons that were my absolute must-haves.
The newly opened outlet makes people like me who love to hang out at the Khan Market happy as now there is one more place to look out for. It also brings with it the nostalgia of great fresh sushi and dim sums that Yum Yum Tree was so known for.
Though smaller in size, the new outlet brings in the same funky vibe as the other two outlets. Ankon Mitra’s colourful Origami in aluminium, covering the ceiling and walls, lends the space the busyness of a market place in Far East — talk about order in chaos. It’s a good idea to book a table in advance — given that the place was packed two times that I was there for dinner with friends.
The fun element spills over to the way the crockery has been selected, table linen designed and menu showcased. Old timers would be delighted to see several of their favourites listed on the menu. Should you wish to try something different, the servers are more than happy to guide you through the new additions.
Take on food
It’s a good idea to begin with refreshing Thai orange and Kaffir lime drink that comes in a fun old style milk bottle. And yes, edamame! Yum Yum Cha offers a spicy variation, but nothing to beat the classic.
Yum Yum Cha menu is quite exhaustive and fun to explore. You have a choice of ordering larger numbers and a variety from the basket. My recommendations from the menu are: Prawn Har Gao, Chicken & Chestnut and Pink Crab from the non vegetarian section and Bok Choy, Spice Asparagus and Edamame & Truffle in the vegetarian selection.
Of course you can’t be in Yum Yum Cha and not order sushi. My favourites from the meat eating section were: Hanna (salmon and spicy tuna) and Peking (roast duck , mango and mentaiko). In the vegetarian selection, it was Asparagus Tempura and Spicy Avocado.
From the Wok selection, I recommend Thai style basil vegetable and Spicy long beans with black bean and chillies.
Must try at the new outlet is their Paper Hot Pot. This time I went with an old favourite, Tom Yum Yum but my friend strongly recommends the new Japanese Curry hot pot with crispy prawns.
In the dessert selection, sushi obsessing lot would love Banoffee Sushi. And as they say, no meal here is complete without Mochi ice cream. The Coconut & Jaggery is absolutely delightful. Must try!
